ADMISSION POLICY AND PROCEDURES:


          Admission Policy

  • The University of Lahore admits students whose educational background is sound and can obtain success in higher education.

  • Applications received for admission to study programs are reviewed by the Business School.

  • The applicants are subjected to an admission test, on the basis of which their merit is determined and those who fulfill the standard set by the School are admitted to the desired course.

  • The test is of the same standard as of Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), held for admission to universities in North America. Minimum qualification for admission to the University in undergraduate programs is FA/FSc/ICS/I.COM/A Level or equivalent, as dictated by the requirements of each degree. Minimum qualification for post graduate studies is graduation or equivalent.

  • The School operates main and annexed semesters each year as dictated by each degree program.

  • The admissions are made at the beginning of each semester.

  • In each semester, students can choose load of courses; between 15-25 credits.

  • Students are also admitted to the University on transfer from other institutions provided they fulfill minimum requirements and criteria set out for this purpose.

  • The University also organizes special academic certification and development training programs. These programs include the training of business managers and working executives. Such programs are available throughout the year. Fee structure is affordable to enable those with limited financial means to have access to these programs.

    Admission Procedures

    Regular Degree Bound Students
     

  • Applications for admission are invited at the beginning of each semester.

  • Students are required to apply on a prescribed Admission Form available along with the package of information about the University from the Admission Office of the School or the University.

  • Independent enquiries can be made from the Director of the Institute before submitting the application.

    Eligibility
     

  • Eligibility criteria for each program appear in the advertisements and are also described in the information package.

  • The cost of the information packages is Rs.400 non-refundable.

  • All applicants are subjected to entry test designed in accordance with the standards of the SAT.

  • Admission is granted on merit on the basis of aggregate percentage of marks obtained in the last examination and the entry test.

  • Each student, admitted on merit, is expected to take the full load of courses prescribed for the semester. All full time undergraduate students are to take minimum number of 3 courses in each semester.

  • Letters of admission to students admitted to the program are issued by the office of the Dean.

  • The letters of admission not only announce the admission of the applicant, but also spell out the program of orientation, registration, enrolment, fee structure and launching date of classes.

  • Only students who have completed all the formalities and deposited their fees on the prescribed date are eligible to attend the classes.

    Entry Test

    The University of Lahore admits students whose educational background is sound and who can achieve success in higher education. Applications received for admission to various programs are reviewed by the concerned departments.
    The applicants are also subjected to an admission test. The final merit is determined on the basis of past academic performance, score obtained in the admission test and performance, in the interview. The test is of the same standard as of Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) for undergraduate studies and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for graduate studies.

    Orientation
     

  • The orientation of students, admitted to the University is held on a specified date notified in the advertisement and the information package.

  • The orientation session begins with a general assembly addressed by the Rector and Deans of Management Sciences.

  • Subsequently, students admitted to programs are given further orientation by the Academic Advisor and the Director of the Program.

  • During the orientation, students may contact senior students to seek information on various counts related with activities of the University, and its academic programs.

  • The School designates a group of student leaders with whom contacts can be made by fresh students. Their names and place where they will receive fresh students is notified on the notice board.

  • On the orientation day, students are introduced to the faculty and are allowed to visit the campus of the School and the University.

  • The campus can also be visited during week days except Sundays after contacting the Office of the Academic Director.

  • Students can visit Admission Counselor to seek any information about their academic program. . Students are encouraged to bring their parents during the orientation program.

    Readmission

     

  • Students who make an initial enrolment but do not join the following semester will have one year valid admission status provided they left in good standing and have not attended another college since leaving the University.

  • After one semester, students in good standing and with no college work since leaving the School may reactivate their admission status by completing Readmission Form.

  • Students who leave the University in good standing and subsequently take additional college work must complete a readmission form and have official transcripts sent from each institution attended. The readmission decision will be made under existing transfer of admission standards.

  • Students dismissed from University shall not be eligible for readmission.

    STUDENT FEES

    Period of Application

    The fees and costs identified in this package pertain to the academic year 2006-2007 and are subject to change by the Business School.

    Admission Validation Deposit

    Each student is required to submit admission application on a prescribed form after depositing an amount of Rs. 4OO/ in the name of the Institute of Accountancy and Finance. The cost of application also includes the cost of information package.

    Admission / Registration / Enrolment Fees
     

  •  All students admitted to the Business School are charged a one time fee of Rs. 15000/13000 for Graduate and Rs. 15000 / 19500 postgraduate courses as admission/Registration fee.

  • In addition to the registration fees, which are a one time charge, at the time of admission, enrolment fee of Rs.500 will be charged from each student, at the beginning of each new semester.

  • Registration and enrolment fees shall be payable by transfer students as well as those who are re-admitted after having discontinued their studies at the university.

    University and Exemption Fees

    The fees to be charged are described in the Fee Schedule on page 33.

    Examination Fee

    Every undergraduate or graduate student is required to deposit a sum of Rs.500 as examination fee for each course.

    Late Registration Fee

    A late fee of Rs.3,000 is charged from a student who applies for registration after the expiry of the officially notified date. This fee is not applicable to those students completing the drop out or adds procedure, according to the notified procedure.

    Late Add Fee

    A late add fee of Rs.25 per day is charged from those students who have not deposited their fee on the notified date.

    Student Activity Fee

    The student activity fee is used for promoting extracurricular activities of students, study tours, conferences, seminars and sports, among others. A fee of Rs.500 per student per semester is charged both from undergraduate and graduate students.

    Classification as resident and non-resident student

    Resident Students

    Student classification as a resident for the purpose of assessing tuition fees is determined by the following policy as approved by the Board of Governors:

  • A resident student must have Pakistan nationality supported by a domicile for any part of Pakistan.

  • A student domiciled in Pakistan must have a domicile of the areas of his/her residence, at the time of applying for admission.

  • An alien lawfully admitted to permanent residence in Pakistan and who has obtained his/her spouse, and children's permanent visa, and who have met the other requirements for being a resident, may register as a resident student.

    Non-Resident Students

    Non-Resident students, include expatriate Pakistanis, resident in foreign countries.

    Financial Assistance and Scholarships

    The University of Lahore is keen that children who show high merit and have limited financial means should be able to enter into higher education and complete their studies. Accordingly, the School has designed a Financial Assistance Program which includes the categories: (a) financial assistance and Qarz-e-Hasna, and (b) scholarships.

    Financial Assistance
     

  • The number of financial assistantship vary from institute/school for which announcement is made by each institute/school separately.

  • The application for financial assistance may be made on the prescribed form, and submitted to the registrar at the beginning of each semester.

  • Each case of financial assistance shall be scrutinized by the Dean or committee of the Institute/school appointed for this purpose.

  • Final Decision in each case shall be made by the Dean. Generally those students who have shown high academic performance in their studies shall be eligible for continuation of awards.

    Scholarships

    Scholarships are available in some subjects, the conditions for which are described by the Institute/School for time to time. For information in this regard, correspondence may be made with the Dean of the Institute/School.

    Continuation of Financial Aid

    Students who will avail concessions in tuition fee on the ground of financial hardships will be required to maintain a minimum of 3.0 GPA. Failure on this account will make them ineligible for any financial aid.

    Refund Policy

    Fee/charges once paid will not be refunded.

    GENERAL INFORMATION AND ACADEMIC REGULATIONS

    General Information
     

  • This information package is published periodically, usually after an interval of two years. For postal services, contact The University of Lahore, City Campus 47/C3, Gulberg III Lahore.

  • Copies of this information package are also available at The University of Lahore, main campus, and the Institute of Business Administration and Technology (IBADAT), Ibadat Plaza, Blue Area, Islamabad, from 9 am to 6 pm.

  • The provisions of this package include policies, rules, codes, regulations and any other information with regard to academic programs issued by the University from time to time. The university reserves the right to withdraw, revoke and/or cancel an admission decision for any reason, and at any time, it deems warranted. This right shall be applicable also in cases when the University receives authentic information about misstatement of an applicant, after admission decision is made. The University of Lahore reserves the right to change, delete, or add to requirements, procedures, and/or other provisions at any time without prior notice. Such changes may include modification, and discontinuation of programs as well as modification or discontinuation of specific courses.

  • Student affected by such decisions will be advised by the University on the various options available for completing the degree program.

  • The University of Lahore also reserves the right regarding dismissals, suspensions, withdrawal, denials of requests or applications, cancellation and impositions of holds on records of students and other administrative decisions at all times.

  • The academic calendars are subject to change without notice.

  • The University of Lahore requires that all students demonstrate skills in reading, writing, mathematics and computer literacy deemed appropriate and sufficient by the University as conditions for the awarding of any degree. These conditions may be met, at the discretion of the University, through regular courses of study or special testing.

  • The University works under the supervisions of the Board of Governors and retains the right to rescind any degree obtained improperly, that is, through misrepresentation, incomplete or false information and/or violation of the university rules. In such cases, before making any final decision to rescind a degree, however, the university will provide to the student an opportunity to present his case personally to the Board of Governs.

  • The students of The University of Lahore will be under obligation to comply with all the requirements of the University whenever approved by a competent authority.

    GRADING

    X-Grade-Unofficial Withdrawal

    The grade 'X' is used to indicate that a student has never attended a class or has discontinued attendance and does not qualify for "I" grade. Grade 'X' will be included in the computation of students' grade point average.

    I-Grade-Incomplete

    A temporary course grade is granted by an instructor when necessary absence or other reasons prevent completion of course requirements by the end of the semester or session. A student must be passing the course to be relieved of an "I" grade. An 'I' grade is not given as a substitute for a failing or low grade. An incomplete grade will convert to an 'X' grade if the course is not completed within the next semester.

    W-Grade-Official Withdrawal

    A "W" grade is given in a course from which a student officially withdraws at least one day prior to the last mid-term.

    An-Audit

    The symbol 'AUD' is used to indicate that a student has enrolled in a course as an auditor, has attended at least three-fourth of the classes and laboratory sessions, and has given evidence to the course instructor that the role as auditor has been satisfactory. A student who registers for a course as an auditor, with the permission of the instructor, is not eligible to sit for examinations, earns no credit hours for the registration, and pays full tuition fee. The student must enroll in the audit status at the time of registration, and may not be transferred from the audit status after course has begun.

    Grade Change

    A student who believes that an error has been made in the assignment of a grade must initiate contact with the concerned administration office within thirty days of the end of the semester for which the grade was assigned. Failure to act within the specified time period will disqualify the student from further consideration of the matter.
    Honor Point

    The number of honor points earned in a course is the number of semester credit hours given by the course multiplied by the value of the letter grade received.
    Honor point deficiencies acquired in credits earned at the University of Lahore cannot be made up by credits and honor points at another university. Only credit hours are transferred from another university, neither grades nor honor points.

    Grade Point Average

    A grade point average is obtained by dividing the total number of honor points earned by the total number of semester hours completed. For example, a total for forty-eight honor points earned in a semester by a student who completed sixteen hours of course work gives a grade point average of 3.0 for the semester.

    ACADEMIC STANDARDS

    Academic Standards

    All graduate students must earn an overall grade point average of at least. 2 5 to satisfy progress towards the end. The students who do not obtain minimum CGPA 2.5 will not be issued with transcript they will have to improve their grades in the papers passed on low grades Good Standing: a student is in good standing whenever his overall grade point average is at least 2.5 Warning: whenever the grade point average for any enrolment period is less than 2.5 but the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is 2.5 or above, the student will be warned.

    Probation: if a student's CGPA falls below 2.5 the student will be placed on probation for one semester.
    Continued on probation: if the CGPA increases by 0.1 or more during the semester of privation although still below (2.5) cumulative, the student will be continued on probation for an additional enrolment period at the discretion of the academic department holding the student's program.
    Probation Removed: when the conditions of good standing are restored, probation will be removed.
    Dismissal: Student who fails to increase his/her CGPA to 0.1 or better at the end of an enrolment period of Probation or whose CGPA fails to reach 2.5 at the end of an enrolment period of continued probation will be dismissed from the University. Only the departmental head may allow the student to continue considering his commitment to studies. Students who will be dismissed from the University of Lahore will remain out for at least one full sixteen-week semester. Dismissed students must apply for readmission through the normal admission process. Student will get readmission application from the admission office, which in turn will forward students readmission application.
    Appeal Procedure: Upon appeal by the student, the program of academic unit admission body will determine whether or not to grant "continued on probation status". "Continued on probation status" must be granted to the student by the program of academic unit admission body in order to register for next semester courses, an Appeal must be initiated prior to the subsequent semester's last day.
    Repeated Courses: Any course in which a student is enrolled for more than once is considered a repeated course. With the program advisor's approval, the grade and credit earned in the repeated course will be included in students' transcript.
    Transfer Credits: Transfer credit will be recorded on the Institutes/University's transcripts "Credit" (CR) only and will not be calculated into the honor points earned and the graduate grade point average at the Institute/University of Lahore Grades and honor points do not transfer, only credit transfers. As a consequence honor points deficiencies acquired in credits earned at the Institute/University of Lahore cannot be made up by credits earned at another institute/university. Grade Reports: At the completion of each semester, students are issued official grade reports. The report contains grades obtained in each course attempted. The grade report will be sent to each student at the house address.
    Attendance Policy: The University has definite attendance policy for each course, which is explained to the students at the time of orientation. Violation of these regulations shall make the students liable to receive an "F" grade in the course. Excused absences do not absolve students from the necessity of fulfilling all course requirements.
    Academic Integrity: Academic integrity is a basic value for higher learning. Cheating in an examination or submitting someone else's paper/work can violate academic integrity, as one's own. In case of proven academic dishonesty the student will receive a sanction which may include suspension or expulsion.

    EXEMPTION SCHEME

    A Student who has qualified any paper of a study program in the examinations conducted by relevant professional body will be given exemption in that paper.

    All students seeking exemption under this scheme are required to apply on prescribed form along with the fee and supporting documents to the Dean before applying for registration as student of the Institute/University of Lahore.

    TRANSFER STUDENTS

    Students who have completed part of their study in another institution will be accepted by the University of Lahore in accordance with the following procedure:
     

  • Each student desirous to get admission on transfer basis shall submit an application on the prescribed form along with original official transcript issued by the previous institution(s).

  • The transfer student shall be interviewed by the committee headed by the Director of the Institute to verify and explain part of the application materials.

  • If the committee of the institute is satisfied, the status of the transfer of student will be notified by the Registrar.

  • On receiving the admission notice, the transfer student will be required to complete the formalities of registration, enrolment and payment of fees.

  • Only after payment of fees a transfer student shall be entitled to attend classes.


    DISCIPLINE

    At the University of Lahore, we believe that good quality education has to be supported by well¬ maintained discipline. Hence, the following actions on campus will be strongly dealt with:
    Smoking on Campus: any student reported smoking within the premises will be fined at least Rs.2, 000. The maximum penalty will be expulsion of the student from the roll of the University.
    Use of Mobile Phone: students are not allowed to use mobile phones anywhere on campus. The minimum penalty for using the mobile phone on premises is a fine of Rs.1, 000 as well as confiscation of the phone set.
    Violation of Dress Code: any student reported to have violated the dress code, will be fined a minimum of Rs.1 00 for one time offence. On repeated violation the fine will be increased to Rs.500.
